The recent passing of Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has led to a period of mourning and reflection in Dubai, impacting both its leadership and community. A 10-day mourning period has been declared in the emirate, marking the significant role Sheikh Ahmed played in the nation’s development.
Sheikh Ahmed, brother of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, was laid to rest following funeral prayers at the Zabeel Grand Mosque. His burial took place at the Umm Hurair Cemetery, attended by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, alongside rulers and crown princes from across the Emirates.
The leaders, including Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi of Sharjah and Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi of Fujairah, gathered at the Zabeel Majlis to offer their condolences to Sheikh Mohammed. They remembered Sheikh Ahmed’s contributions to the UAE since its formation, highlighting his dedication to public service and his impact on the nation.
Sheikh Ahmed held significant positions such as deputy chairman of Dubai Police and chairman of ARM Holding. He was also deeply involved in the sports sector, notably establishing the Jebel Ali Racecourse in 1990 and leading Al Wasl Sports Club as its president for many years.
This period of mourning reflects the loss felt across the UAE as the nation remembers a leader who played a pivotal role in both governance and the community. Sheikh Ahmed’s legacy is marked by his service and dedication to the development and prosperity of Dubai and the wider UAE.
