Dubai’s Al Maktoum International Airport is poised to establish a groundbreaking 50-kilometre autonomous people mover network, designed to efficiently transport passengers through its expansive airport complex. The innovative system will feature nine stations and is slated for completion by December 2031, setting the stage for the airport’s inaugural phase opening in 2032. As the airport expands through subsequent phases, the driverless rail system will grow to include a total of 14 stations.
This ambitious project is expected to become the largest automated people mover network globally, surpassing existing systems at major airports like Dallas Fort Worth and New York’s JFK. The development of Al Maktoum International Airport aims to accommodate an impressive 260 million passengers and 12 million tonnes of cargo each year. The initial phase will introduce the West Terminal, Concourse 1, and the new people mover system, enhancing the airport’s annual passenger capacity to 130 million.
In addition to the internal transport system, the airport will benefit from enhanced regional connectivity. Plans are underway for an Airport Express Link that will connect Al Maktoum International Airport with Dubai International Airport. Future expansions will also link the airport to Etihad Rail and the Dubai Metro, further integrating it into the region’s transport network.
