In a significant diplomatic development, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian announced efforts to strengthen ties with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), putting aside past differences. This announcement followed his meeting with Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Khaled bin Mohamed during the BRICS Summit in New Delhi. Pezeshkian characterized the meeting as constructive, emphasizing the mutual decision to focus on future cooperation. This dialogue comes amid ongoing regional tensions, with a shared interest in enhancing security and securing critical shipping routes.

Upcoming discussions are slated to occur in Oman on September 14, where Iranian officials will engage with representatives from Gulf countries and Iraq. These talks aim to bolster regional security and facilitate better cooperation concerning the Strait of Hormuz. Notably, Bahrain has opted out of participating in the meeting. The discussions are expected to prioritize boosting collective security and fostering a deeper understanding among regional nations.

President Pezeshkian also addressed the broader economic landscape, advocating for stronger economic collaboration among BRICS nations. He proposed increased utilization of national currencies in trade and the development of improved financial mechanisms, arguing that reliance on existing global systems leaves emerging economies susceptible to political and economic pressures. He urged BRICS countries to fortify their economic resilience and cooperation, standing against unilateral sanctions and assaults on civilian infrastructure.

Highlighting Iran’s strategic advantages, Pezeshkian pointed to the nation’s energy resources and transit networks as vital contributions to developing trade and energy corridors among BRICS economies. This emphasis on Iran’s potential role reflects the broader context of heightened tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, underscoring the importance of regional dialogue and cooperation for maintaining security and ensuring the stability of global energy supplies.
