Elon Musk has launched Grokipedia, an online encyclopedia he calls “super important for civilization.” The platform’s most defining feature is its complete lack of human authors or editors, placing it in direct opposition to its primary rival, Wikipedia.
Grokipedia is written and “fact-checked” exclusively by Grok, the artificial intelligence chatbot developed by Musk’s company. This AI-only approach is a deliberate choice by Musk, who has long criticized Wikipedia’s volunteer-driven, transparent editing process.
Musk’s criticism extends to the “mainstream media,” including news outlets often cited by Wikipedia. He has pushed his social media platform X (formerly Twitter) as an alternative, programming it to favor conservative voices. Grokipedia appears to be the next step in building his own information ecosystem.
The AI-generated content already reflects a strong conservative bias. The entry on the January 6 Capitol riot, for instance, includes the disproven lie about “widespread claims of voting irregularities” and downplays the severity of the attack.
This reliance on AI is also leading to factual errors. Journalists have flagged inaccurate information, such as a false connection between pornography and the Aids epidemic. The encyclopedia’s launch follows an August Gallup poll that found Musk to be the most disliked public figure in the United States.
