In a significant shift, Google is set to modify how Android device backups are managed by incorporating them into the free cloud storage quota associated with each Google Account. Currently, these backups, which encompass SMS messages, call history, device settings, and app data, do not count against the 15GB of complimentary storage shared across Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos. However, an imminent update will see these backups included in the overall storage limit.
This new policy is anticipated to take effect in the coming weeks. According to Google, the average Android backup is estimated to increase storage usage by approximately 40MB. Users nearing or exceeding their storage limits may eventually need to free up space or consider upgrading to a Google One subscription. In cases where an account’s available storage is depleted, automatic device backups will be paused until additional space is made available.
Along with this change in storage policy, Google is reportedly working on developing more detailed backup controls. These new controls will provide users with the ability to select which apps and data types they wish to back up, potentially reducing the size of backups and offering users greater autonomy over their cloud storage management.
